Why does criticism hurt so much




















Constructive criticism should be viewed as useful feedback that can help you improve yourself rather than put you down. When criticism is constructive it is usually easier to accept, even if it still hurts a little. In either scenario always try to remember that you can use criticism to your advantage.

Some individuals are critical by nature and do not always realise that they are hurting the feelings of another person. If you know a person who is critical of everything try not to take their comments too seriously, as this is just part of their character trait.

If you do take negative comments to heart it can create resentment and anger towards the other person, which could damage the relationship. Remember, people who criticise everything or make scathing remarks to be hurtful are the ones that need help — not you! How you physically react to criticism will depend on the nature of the criticism, where you are and who the criticism is coming from.

Try to remain calm and treat the other person with respect and understanding. This will help to defuse the situation and potentially stop it from getting out of hand. Show that you are the stronger person and try not to rise to the bait, do not use it as a reason to offer counter criticism.

But in reality, that's not usually the case. And although I encourage delivering criticism in a way that's constructive and helpful I've come a long way since that first management position , these points are important when we're giving criticism.

When we're on the receiving end of criticism, our goal should be to learn from the feedback, and not let emotion close our minds. The key is to be proactive, not reactive.

I discuss this further in part one of this series. That being said, what reactions do emotionally intelligent people try to avoid when they're criticized? When receiving criticism, your first instinct might be to think: Is it really that big of a deal? Maybe it is, or maybe it isn't. For the person who brought it to your attention, it was. And you can be sure it will be for others, too.

As a young teen, when Dad came home and asked why I hadn't taken the garbage out, I would respond:. See, it's right next to the door. If you are a highly sensitive person and struggle with criticism, here are some strategies that are aimed to help you move and grow through these experiences more gracefully. The difference between constructive and destructive criticism is the way in which the comments are delivered.

Constructive criticism points out faults and includes advice or suggestions on how they can be corrected Always check your blind spot before changing lanes. Destructive criticism seeks to tear down or directly attack the person and does not include practical advice for improvement Youre doing it all wrong.

Our first instinct when faced with criticism is to get defensive. Even when the criticism is intended to be helpful, it can feel like rejectionwhich triggers our natural flight or fight response. But when we fire back immediately from a place of intense emotion, we often say things we regret later. As best you can, resist the urge to respond right away. Take a step back from the situation and think about how youre going to process it.

Wait until youre in a calmer, clearer space before you say anything. Many HSPs struggle with black-and-white thinkingmeaning that they see themselves as a huge success one moment and a complete failure the next, based on their most recent accomplishment or failure. This type of thinking prevents people from seeing themselves as a cohesive, realistic wholecomprised of BOTH positive and negative traits.

Stay present and give your thoughts a reality check. Once youve identified an extreme thought, ask yourself, Where is the evidence that Im the worst employee on the entire planet? It can be easy to misinterpret even the slightest amount of negative criticism.

Ask follow up questions to make sure you fully understand what is being said to you. The criticism was feeding my own limiting beliefs. What is it for you? What beliefs did you discover? Is it true? How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?

Who would you be without the thought? I am inadequate. Can I absolutely know that it is true? The turnaround would be: I am very capable at my job.
