Live organ harvesting is both a way of killings political i. It is reported, as evidence, that even Falun Gong who were not in prison, could be tested for potential organ transplant suitability. In line with the opening quotation of this opinion piece, the intent to destroy the followers of Falun was reinforced by the profitability and prestige attached to China becoming the world leader in organ transplants.
The Tribunal has no doubt whatsoever that physical acts have been carried out that are indicative of the crime of genocide. Further they belong to one or more of the groups that are specifically identified in the Genocide Convention as deserving of protection, namely a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. In spite of having adopted an explicitly and deliberately cautious view of all the evidence presented to it, the judges of the China Tribunal concluded that, yes, the practitioners of Falun Gong in China had been the object of state practices that amounted to genocide of a religious group.
Yet this opens up a no less horrifying prospect. Might this genocide of a religious minority have started as persecution motivated by hatred, and become a genocide conducted for national prestige, money and political power?
After all, in being ruthlessly persecuted for nationalist ends by the PRC state, followers of Falun Gong are not alone. Falun Gong is a religious movement in China. It involves the practice of qigong — a mix of meditation, energy exercises and regulated breathing — and is guided by a moral philosophy and the ultimate goal of achieving spiritual enlightenment. Falun Gong, with an estimated seven to 20 million adherents, is a Buddhist-like spiritual group that lives out compassion, truthfulness.
In one of my trips to China, I observed from my high-rise hotel room local citizens practicing qigong exercises in the village courtyard. The Chinese Communist Party CCP , however, claims the Falun Gong is evil because it demonstrates cult behavior, instills mind control in individuals, spreads heretical ideas and promotes methods for accumulating wealth — all the while endangering Chinese society.
In , the CCP decided they had had enough. Informally it became known as the Office. The assignment of the Office is to persecute and eradicate Falun Gong. In , a Chinese medical doctor, Dr. Zang Yunjin, who trained in the U. His specialty was liver transplants. Zhu assured them that the Party was not opposed to Falun Gong and agreed to the release of the detainees.
On June 10, , the Politburo Standing Committee created the Office as a subdivision of the Party to monitor, track, and persecute Falun Gong and other disfavored religious groups. On July 20th, hundreds of Falun Gong adherents were taken into custody by security forces.
Initially, the CCP-controlled press declared that Falun Gong was banned as a threat to social order because its spiritual beliefs and values of truth, compassion, and tolerance were incompatible with Marxist materialism. That derogatory label was applied 3 months later to undermine public sympathy for practitioners and to mislead the world. Since the persecution started, state-run media have flooded the printing presses and airwaves with fabrications about Falun Gong and its founder, Mr.
Li Hongzhi, to draft the entire society into the ranks of persecutors, thus creating an environment in which practitioners had no rights and no security. It was at this point that the group made perhaps the most ill-judged move in the history of peaceful protest. On April 25, more than 10, practitioners gathered near the Zhongnanhai government compound in Beijing to demand an end to official harassment. On July 20, , security forces swooped, detaining several thousand leading Falun Gong practitioners.
These findings are supported by the US State Department. According to human rights groups, detainees have been subjected to forced labor, torture, arbitrary execution and organ harvesting. This campaign reached another level when five alleged Falun Gong practitioners set themselves on fire at Tiananmen Square on Jan. Two of them died. The self-immolation event saw the propaganda campaign gain serious traction with the general public, which had previously been largely ambivalent and even sympathetic toward Falun Gong.
So the government won? Kind of.
